68 years young, Petrona Martínez is one of the world’s most authentic
Afro-Colombian voices. She’s the heiress to a long tradition of Bullerengue – rhythmic songs originally sung only by pregnant women, confined to home and unable to attend village dances. Petrona learned the melodies from her great-grandmother and grandmother who sang during daily chores and at patron saints festivities. Now she is passing them on to her sons and daughters, some of whom comprise her energetic eight-piece ensemble. Her fresh, uninhibited style, sprightly dancing and highly percussive sound earned her a 2002 Latin Grammy nomination.
“…a deep rhythm, contagious and vital.” –
